Macross Zero - Anime Review

As I’m a fan of the Macross franchise, I thought that this five-episode OVA series was good, though IMO, I prefer Macross Plus over this OVA series. The elements of this OVA series that I didn’t like were the constant change of 3DCG to 2D digital animation of the mecha, throughout this OVA series. An example of this is episode three of this OVA series, where Shin and Edgar fight some anti-un mecha underwater, and the mecha units are drawn into 2D digital animation. When Shin gets shot down in episode one of this OVA series, Nora’s mecha changes from 3DCG to 2D digital animation. I thought that the love triangle between Shin, Sara and Moa was well developed, as both girls got to kiss Shin, in this OVA series. I thought that Edgar, Shin’s co-pilot doesn’t get much character development in this OVA series. Also, Nora and D.D IMO don’t get much screen time, and character development IMO. This series IMO had lots of Itano circus in the dog fights in the sky.

I thought the weakest part of this OVA series was the soundtrack, as I couldn’t really get excited in the majority of this OVA series scene wise. I thought that Roy’s mecha transformation from fighter to battleloid mode, was an excellent scene. There’s nudity in this OVA series from Sara and Moa from episode two to five. I also thought that the Earth Girl Arjuna references in this OVA I thought weren’t funny, as I thought that this OVA series, was a series mecha/music/drama/action series. Overall, I thought that this OVA series was very good, though there were some small elements of this story that could have been improved, IMO.
